Beer and Losing Weight

They say you can’t have carbs when you’re trying to lose weight. They say cut out beer. I don’t know who the heck THEY are, but I am throwing those rules out the window, starting now!
You CAN enjoy carbs and yes, even a brew (gasp!) when you’re focusing on your health – whether that be building muscle, toning or losing weight. Yup, you heard me right. How do I know that it’s doable? Because I’m living proof. Let me introduce myself – my name is Tia, I’m a Sales Analyst at a pretty kick-ass brewery up in Minnesota! So how can I still drink beer and lose weight with a part desk job – what’s the secret? Moderation. I changed up my nutrition plan recently and after dialing in portion control I quickly realized that the old saying is true – a little bit of everything is fine, all in moderation! Chips & salsa? Chocolate? Beer? Whatever your vice, do yourself a favor and don’t try to fully cut out things you enjoy; find a way to tweak the rest of your nutrition and fit them in. Giving up your favorite foods completely will eventually backfire and you’ll binge and overindulge big time and completely ruin all your hard work! Instead, plan it into your week. Know you are going to meet some buddies at the new taproom opening on Friday? Cut out those extra noodles with Friday’s lunch! Seriously, it’s all about finding a good balance.
When you enjoy beer, it is no doubt a challenge to find that balance. But when you work in the industry – between sampling, panels, shift beers, account promos, beer fests… it’s downright impossible to cut beer out of your life. So I made it a mission of mine to finally find the PERFECT meal plan. I’ve struggled for years (even before I got into the beer world) with trying to drop a few pounds. And then like college, I felt like I gained a “Freshman 15” when I landed my first job in the brewing industry that first year!! I knew I needed to start focusing on my health even more and this past year invested a lot of time and energy into understanding nutrition and fitness on a deeper level; and I have begun sharing my knowledge and tips with others to help them reach their fitness goals too. Knowing that my job requires me to imbibe from time to time (ahem, frequently), I needed to come up with a ‘magical diet’ that even includes beer. I soon came to find out that this actually EXISTS!! Between 30 minute at-home workouts (because who actually has time to go to the gym anyways…), a little bit of nutritional moderation, and actually eating proper portions has helped me find a way to keep beer in my life and drop 40 pounds last year all while keeping beer in my daily life!
Focusing on your health doesn’t need to be complex and complicated. Keep it simple and you’ll get the results you’re after. Have trouble sticking to a plan? Find a workout buddy or join an online support group through Facebook – there’s a ton out there and yes, they actually work at holding you accountable, or join mine!
