MY FAVORITE Pumpkin Beers For The Season
by Brandon Novara
Over the last several years, pumpkin has been the flavor of everything through the months of September to November. However, those flavors start to make there way to the stores and shelves in August. Despite some of the negative feelings people might have, there is a huge market for Pumpkin beers. Don’t get me wrong, I believe we have too many out there now and some are just down right questionable. I am not ashamed to admit that I love pumpkin and beer — so clearly we have to have a few that are worth mentioning:
1. SOUTHERN TIER : WARLOCK
Warlock is a dark, rich, deep Pumpkin stout that satisfies not only the stout lovers but the pumpkin lovers as well.
The pumpkin spice is not overpowering and actually compliments the other flavors very well.
AVERY BREWING : RUMPKIN
Really all you need to know is that Avery made this beer. That alone is the reason you should drink “Rumpkin”. That being said, it really is a great beer. This is a monstrous pumpkin ale; full of spice and aged in fine fresh rum barrels, adding flavors of oak and candied molasses. This first member of the Annual Barrel-Aged Series was brewed with roasted pumpkins from a local Boulder County farm and spiced with nutmeg, cinnamon, and ginger. This is no weak beer as it comes in at 16.73%.
TUPPS ; FULL GROWN JACK
This is not the first pumpkin style beer that Tupps produced, but in my opinion, it is their best. Full Grown Jack is their latest in variation of the “Full Grown Man”. The pumpkin spice is bold and huge right from the nose and the first taste. It does balance out and then you realize just how big of a stout this truly is.
DOGFISH HEAD : PUNKIN
DFH has had huge success with their unique style of beers and Punkin has been my personal favorite for years. This is a golden ale has subtle spice flavors throughout the beer. This is a great fall beer that even non-pumpkin beer drinkers can appreciate.
